BLK / Casebook

Jobs closed · written up after

The casebook. Closed jobs, described exactly as they ran, including the ones that could not be done.

Approval governs all of it. Nothing is published until the customer has been through the outcome and told us to go ahead, and at that point every identifying detail comes out: the person, the firm, the make and model where it would identify them. Each entry points to the page dealing with that kind of case, for anyone wanting method rather than narrative. The entries below are illustrative examples written to show the shape a casebook entry takes, and they include the honest cases, the ones solved for free by finding a key, and where relevant the ones that could not be recovered, because an honest casebook shows both. They are marked as illustrative and will be replaced by genuine closed jobs as they are approved for publication.

A Dell OptiPlex that went to the BitLocker recovery screen after a firmware update, TPM-only, with a sole trader's accounts on it and no key to hand

The drive was healthy; only the key was needed. The owner had set the machine up with a personal Microsoft account and did not realise Device Encryption had escrowed the key there. We confirmed ownership, guided them to the account, and the machine started on the first try. No recovery work, no fee beyond the free look.

100% intact; key found, not brokenSame day once the account was checked

A Surface laptop whose SSD was failing and which held a 48-digit key the owner had wisely printed, with a postgraduate thesis and its research on it

The case the recovery key is made for. The drive was dropping out. With ownership confirmed, we imaged the failing SSD in passes behind a write blocker, then decrypted the image with the printed key. The thesis and every source came back. The failure was the whole problem; the key made the encryption a non-issue.

100% recovered; key plus imaging5 days at the bench

A BitLocker To Go backup drive whose owner remembered only that the password was a phrase about a holiday, with family photographs that existed nowhere else

There was no recovery key. With ownership confirmed, we built a mask and dictionary attack around what the owner remembered, a short phrase, a place name, a trailing year, and the attack found the password within two days on GPU hardware. Had the password been random, the answer would have been no.

A business laptop's NVMe SSD that began dropping out and then vanished from the BIOS, BitLocker on, with the recovery key in the firm's Entra ID

A failed-drive case with the key in hand, the good outcome. The controller was failing. With the firm's authority and the escrowed key, we read the NAND at the chip level, assembled a complete image of the encrypted volume, and decrypted it with the key. The file system had minor damage, repaired on the clone, and the project came back in full.

100% recovered; failed SSD, key held8 days at the bench

A home laptop that dropped to the recovery screen after a Windows update, whose owner was certain they had never used BitLocker, with years of photographs on it

They were right that they never set it up; Device Encryption had. The drive was healthy. We established which Microsoft account the laptop used, had the owner sign in, and the 48-digit key was there against the device. It started on the first try, and we charged nothing beyond the free look.

An encrypted data drive whose owner had forgotten a password set years earlier, recalling only that it was two short words and a number, with a decade of family history research on it

No recovery key existed, so the password was the only way in. We built a mask and dictionary attack from what the owner remembered, and on GPU hardware it found the password in under a day. The research came back in full. Had the password been long and random, the honest answer would have been no.

A company-issued laptop whose SSD failed, Entra-joined, with the recovery key in the organisation's directory and a departing employee's handover files on it

A managed case with a hardware twist. The IT manager confirmed authority and read the recovery key from Entra ID. The SSD had failed, so we imaged it behind a write blocker and decrypted the image with the escrowed key. The handover files came back and went to the organisation under its authorisation.

100% recovered; escrowed key, failed drive6 days at the bench

A desktop whose motherboard was replaced under warranty, TPM-only, whose owner had no idea BitLocker was on until the rebuilt machine demanded a key, with a photographer's catalogue on it

The new board meant a new TPM, so the drive asked for a key the owner did not know existed. The drive was healthy. We found Device Encryption had escrowed the key to the owner's Microsoft account; the 48-digit key was there, and the drive opened. Had they cleared the old TPM or reinstalled first, the catalogue would have been at risk.
